A Hot-Wire Anemometry technique for compressible non-isothermal flows

Thanks to its high spatial resolution and bandwidth, Hot-Wire Anemometry (HWA) is the most widely used measurement technique in turbulence research. Nevertheless, despite its popularity and longevity (the first publications date back to the beginning of the 20th century), several limitations are still hindering the application of HWA to complex industrial flows such as the turbomachinery ones. From the most general point of view, in transonic non-isothermal flows, the output of a hot-wire anemometer is a function of velocity, flow angle, density and temperature variations.
The present symposium aims at providing a global overview on a recently developed HWA calibration and post-processing technique that allows overcoming such limitations while enhancing the quality of the measurements. The HWA basics will be firstly introduced and the new technique described in detail, both from a theoretical and a practical point of view : the probe’s design criteria and the whole experimental methodology will be discussed and some examples on simplified test-cases will be also given. In the end, some considerations on the measurement uncertainty of turbulence quantities will be provided.

Fabrizio Fontaneto defended his PhD in 2014 at the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics where he is now enrolled as Assistant Professor in the Turbomachinery and Propulsion Department. His research interests concern the aerodynamic and thermal characterization of complex turbomachinery flows and, at this extent, the development of high performance instrumentation.
