Buoyant plumes : from simple plumes to volcanoes

Résumé :
The Met Office maintains an operational model, NAME, for predicting a wide range of airborne contaminants such as pollutants, dust, radioactive species and airborne viruses. As one of nine global Volcanic Ash Advisory Centres (VAACs), it also has a responsibility for predicting the spread of volcanic ash as so famously demonstrated after the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull in 2010. Buoyant plumes, such as volcanoes, are thus an important source of airborne contaminants that need to be accounted for by dispersion models. I will consider various plume models including integral plume models, large-eddy simulation of buoyant plumes and volcanic plumes and describe how information from these models is used in dispersion models such as NAME.
