Axisymmetric turbulence

Recently, theoretical progress has been made on the statistical mechanics of axisymmetric turbulence. The predictions include the formation of large-scale structures. Results in agreement with this theory have been observed for the axisymmetric mean flow field in the Von-Karman experiment. This is perhaps surprising since the instantaneous flow in this experiment is far from axisymmetric, and the theory was derived for fully axisymmetric flow, not for the mean flow specifically. Since purely axisymmetric turbulence flow does not exist, the theory cannot further be tested experimentally. We therefore carry out numerical simulations for axisymmetric turbulence.
