Large-scale helical flow generation in the oceans and stars

We propose the investigation of the generation of helical motion in a rotating fluid flow, where the fluid motion is induced by a doubly–diffusive instability, at play in the oceans and in the core of planets and stars. The flow geometry is an idealized academic representation of natural flows in the presence of chemical composition (e.g. salinity) and temperature gradients. The emergence of large-scale helical structure from unstable motions in the oceans and stars will be characterized by means of low dimensional models and numerical simulations.
