 State-of-the-art of Common Rail fuel injection systems for automotive diesel engines

Common Rail (CR) fuel injection systems still cover a key role in the development of the future diesel engines for passenger cars, even though the fate of this propulsion system is today debated after the recent Dieselgate.

The state-of-the-art CR system solutions for automotive diesel engines are discussed, pointing out the main features of the current injection pieces of apparatus and their future trends. Focus is on both component design and control strategies. In particular, indirect-acting piezoelectric and solenoid injectors as well as direct-acting piezoelectric injectors are analyzed. Results of experimental tests performed at the hydraulic rig are shown and discussed with the support of one-dimensional numerical models. Furthermore, experimental data, measured at the dynamometer cell on turbocharged CR engines, are also presented in order to highlight the cause-and-effect-relationships between hydraulic performance and engine results on pollutant emissions, combustion noise and fuel consumption.
